Nightlife

Chiang Mai's nightlife is a lot more restrained than many other places in Thailand but is none the poorer for that. For many people who wish to avoid the rowdy bar girls scene, it is a most welcome change. There are a wealth of places to eat and drink often with a better and friendlier atmosphere than other big tourist destinations. Plenty of pubs and restaurants for you to enjoy but one word of warning before you read on; be prepared to go out earlier than you might elsewhere. The Chiang Mai authorities are strict on the enforcement of licensing laws and most places, with the exception of nightclubs, close at midnight on weekdays and 1am at the weekend.

There are a huge number of places catering to westerners living and visiting Chiang Mai so if you want international cuisine you will find an abundance of choices. On the other hand if you want to mix with locals you will find that Chiang Mai people love to party and are friendly and welcoming. The Thais love to eat while they drink and you will often see tables laden with food as well as drink upo which revelers will ‘graze' throughout the evening.

Thai people love music and Chiang Mai is home to a very lively music scene playing both western covers and Thai tunes from all music genres. Karaoke is also popular and if you find yourself in one of these establishments, don't be surprised to find a microphone thrust in front of you to entertain the crowd. It's all in the cause of ‘sanuk' or fun so enjoy the many attractions the Chiang Mai nightlife scene has to offer.
